Gates played through the toe injury in 2007, and had it surgically repaired the following offseason. The San Diego Union-Tribune makes it sound like Gates has a very good chance to play against the Patriots in Week 7. "It means a ton," said Philip Rivers. "...With what we do with Gates, that’s one that could have an effect on our approach to a game more than the others."

Gates hasn't missed a game since 2005, so there's still a chance that he'll play this week even if he doesn't return to the field on Friday. The Chargers' official injury report comes out late Friday afternoon, though this has the look of a full-blown game-time decision.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Schefter doesn't paint a very rosy picture for Gates, confirming that the currently injured toe is the same one that he had surgery on in 2008. Schefter adds that Gates "knows he shouldn't play, but still will try." If Gates is active he must be in fantasy lineups, but owners should have backup plans in late games at the ready. We will know Gates' official status around 2:30 ET. He remains a true game-time decision.

Gates didn't practice last week, yet still dropped four catches, 50 yards, and a touchdown on the Patriots. The increased participation indicates that he's getting healthier. Gates will start Sunday's game against Tennessee.

The Chargers will probably hold Gates out of Wednesday practices for the rest of the year, but he'll start Sunday's game against the Texans. In seven games against Houston, opposing tight ends are averaging eight catches for 83 yards and have scored six touchdowns. He'll be our No. 1 TE this week. November 3 - 5:11 p.m. ET

Once again, we'll know Gates' official status at around 11:30 ET, so owners are going to need to check back then to make some last minute lineup changes. Things continue to look good for Gates. November 7 - 9:46 a.m. ET

Gates says he "did some running" Tuesday and "pool work" Wednesday before sitting out practice. It doesn't sound like he's planning to go through many drills during the week, and a questionable listing on Friday's final injury report is almost certain. Owners counting on Gates would be smart to grab Randy McMichael in case their fantasy starter is a last-minute scatch.

Gates told reporters this week that the bye, in fact, did not help heal his torn plantar fascia, calling the lingering pain "brutal" and "frustrating." Gates might try to warm up before Monday night's game, but he's no longer worth counting on if you have alternatives like Dustin Keller, Zach Miller, or Visanthe Shiancoe in Sunday games. It looks like Randy McMichael will get another start, though he remains only a low-end TE1 in fantasy.

Gates has told reporters that the bye week didn't help heal his torn plantar fascia, but evidently he'll at least try to give it a go. Don't consider it a lock, though, as it's possible he'll test out the injury in pre-game warm-ups and decide he's not quite ready. Gates is as tough as they come, as Week 9 was the first game he's ever sat out due to injury, but he's referred to his current ailment as "brutal" and "frustrating."

Gates didn't even try to warm up before Week 11 before being ruled out, and this figures to be something that could nag him the rest of the season. We can't rule the mega-tough Gates out, especially in a showdown against the Colts, but we're not betting on him being ready.

Those that picked up someone else to fill in for him are probably kicking themselves, but he's no guarantee to make it through the entire game. Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee are also playing, and Vincent Jackson of course is playing in his first game of the year. The rest of the Chargers' inactives are WR Patrick Crayton, RB Ryan Matthews, S Darrell Stuckey, S Steve Gregory, G Louis Vasquez, DT Cam Thomas, TE Kris Wilson and DE Travis Johnson.

The All-Pro tight end left in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't believed to be due to an aggravation of his plantar fascia or turf toe. It sounds like Gates should be ready to go against the Raiders. He had 92 yards and a touchdown in his last clash with Oakland.

ESPN's John Clayton confirmed earlier today that Gates' chances of suiting up were good, and we're confident in him enough to rank Gates as the No. 2 overall fantasy tight end for Week 13. Despite Ryan Mathews' (ankle) return, Tolbert qualifies as a strong RB2. He has a favorable matchup, and is always a good bet to score.
